How do I teach my dog to not chew paint off the wall and to stop digging up the yard?

your dog is bored, and has too much energy. Mine cost me 3500 dollars in one week from that same ailment. I came home after being gone about an hour, and he (at 4 months) came running up to me with a table leg in his mouth.

If you play and wear him out, that will help alot, The other important thing is lots of training, give him a purpose.. a job. in no time you will have a new dog.

Dont bother correcting him unless you catch him in the act, when you do, firmly (without yelling) say no, and give him something apropriate to play with. then reward him for playing with it.

My german shepherd is a year old and no longer digs, and no longer eats hotel rooms... no longer eats through crates.. and no longer uses tables as sticks. I do agility training eith him, wear him out with a frisbee (every day) and spend lots of time hiding different objects for him to sniff out and find. he is so busy having fun he forgot about all his troublemakingHow do I teach my dog to not chew paint off the wall and to stop digging up the yard?
You need to find a trainer who will work with you on this. You need someone who can see what is going on %26amp; give you advice.

You could cover the wall with something where he chews. The bitter apple won't work I have tried it for several different reason and it just doesn't work. Bleach will bleach the wall but it will be unpleasant to the taste buds. Put up some ply wood where he chew.

You can make a handy dandy long distance correction tool by taking a pop or beer can and put in some pebbles to that when it is shaken or thrown it makes a loud racket. Tape the top and add a bail wire on the top of the can. It is to be thrown by the bail (so as not to make a noise when it is being thrown) when it lands NEAR you dog it makes quite a racket. Catch him chewing on the wall and toss the can, when the can lands %26amp; startles your dog Yell NO BAD DOG, stomp your feet, wave your arms %26amp; Go to him %26amp; shake him by the scruff of the neck, again saying NO BAD DOG.

This tool will work if you are consistent, both for chewing the wall and digging in the yard. You may want to make of several so that you don't have to go %26amp; retrieve it after every correction.

Do not aim to hit the dog with the can, you want it to land just a foot or two away. He will stop doing what he is doing %26amp; look around or run. Any way when the can lands he stops what he is doing %26amp; you come unglued, soon he will learn through association that when he is doing something wrong the god awful noise %26amp; your disapproval happens. You are conditioning him %26amp; teaching him. This tool will work for a lot of things. Barking, digging, jumping a fence, playin in the flower bed etc.

Good luckHow do I teach my dog to not chew paint off the wall and to stop digging up the yard?
The best thing I've found to deter my English Bulldog from chewing things he shouldn't is Bitter Apple Spray. You can buy a bottle at any pet store. Simply spray the things he shouldn't be chewing (the wall, your shoes, anything you want to keep him away from) and allow him to sniff it. My dog hates the smell/taste of it. If I see him going near something that's a no-no, I can just shake the bottle at him. I don't even have to spray it anymore!
The electric shock collar worked for our dog. Only used it a few times, he learned. We got advise from a professional trainer. He recommended the correct type of collar and instructed us in its use.

These that say, ';Don't shock, love the puppy.'; May have something that works, but what we did worked too, and we have a great relationship with our dog.
both suggestions above are good ones...also, we filled all holes...(he had three favorite spots) with large rocks...that ended it! It was suprisingly easy once we found his kryptonite...Thunder hates rocks! lol
kick him up the ****!!!!
Give them something else to do, kong toys stuffed with peanut better work well. There is a bitter tasting spray they sell at pet stores that might discourage him from chewing the wall.
Dogs dig for two reasons. One it could be a predatory instinct. Sometimes they can hear moles or other things under ground that we cannot hear. The second reason that dogs dig is out of boredom. If you let your dog out and leave him/her there for hours at a time they will get bored. I suspect your dog is bored or anxious because of chewing paint off the wall too.

To remedy this, I agree with correcting the dog, but exercise your dog more - go for walks, take them to fun places, and play with them in the yard. If no one is home for 9-12 hours a day, consider getting a dog sitter, someone coming in once a day to let the dog out and to play with them a little.

I would put Bitter Apple (available at petstores) on where the dog is chewing the paint off the wall and it will help deter them. It is non toxic but dogs hate the taste.

I would also buy them one of those puzzle balls where you put small pieces of food in and they have to figure out how to roll them a certain way for the food to drop out. - anything to stimulate the mind.

whatever you do, do not shock the dog! meet their needs instead.
Clicker training devices work wonders, if you can catch him at it. Click it at him, and it makes a noise that we can't really hear, but which bothers their ears. That will teach him quite quickly that walls and holes aren't toys that the pack leader approves of.
I dont know about the paint but I do know about the digging and it works. I have a Jack Russell and he loves to dig. Well I read somewhere that if you put the dirt back in the holes that you have to put some of their poop in there too. Dogs dont like touching their own poop. If you watch your dog potty outside you will see that they tip toe around their feces that they leave laying around. Hope this helps.
when you catch the dog digging simply stick his head inside the whole( if its big enough) in it for about 20 sec. he should get scared and relize that hes clostophobic and see that dark holes aint too great. i know alot bout this i own a rednoes pitbull.
