How do you paint a lighter color paint on top a already painted(darker) wall?

Use a primer and even have the primer tinted to match your top coat. The home center or paint store can tint your primer for you. Kilz brand also is best for priming over another color. How do you paint a lighter color paint on top a already painted(darker) wall?
YOU HAVE TO USE A SEALER PRIMER THAT IS LIGHT COLOR LIKE WHITE OR GRAYHow do you paint a lighter color paint on top a already painted(darker) wall?
You need a primer first. Then you can paint the lighter color.
If the color is really dark use two coats of a good thick primer (Kilz is nice) and you should be cool
Primer and then any color that you like
Use a primer. It's a 'more watery' type of base coat that also helps the main paint settle better into the wall. Make sure it's a primer for light paints (it'll look white, anyway). You don't need to paint a perfect wall - you can leave the roller marks on them), then when it's dry, place the final coat of paint.

We're almost done painting most of our house - you don't realize how many walls you have until you set about to paint them - and priming the walls leaves a more uniform color.
Prime it first, you can use more thant 1 coat
You can prime first then paint, but I have recently discovered a better way... At Walmart they have a Kilz paint that has the primer in it already. I was skeptical until I used it. I will probably never buy another paint brand. My daughter wanted a white wall painted blood red and had done a wall like that before and used 5 coats of paint to get it looking right. We bought the Kilz paint and it completely covered in 2 coats. It amazed me, and I've painted a lot of walls. As far as one coat paints, As you were told to use, this is the only truly one coat paint that I've ever used and it took 2. If we weren't going from such extreme white to red I believe it would have actually only taken one coat. Give it a try. Good luck and God bless!!
use primer
primer and buy the densest pigment primer they have.
You will need to prim the wall with a light primmer before you paint it a lighter color.
use a primer paint over the dark color first, it stops the dark from leaching thru and not as much paint is required
It depends on the original color of the wall and if you are going for a shade lighter. Now if the shade lighter is not the same color of the original wall, then you have to stain the wall white and use the color you want on top of that. (You should also check out paint charts where ever they sell paint.
USE PRIMER FIRST AND THEN YOU CAN USE ANY COLOR YOU WANT..
You need to by a one coat paint. In other words, you need to buy a really good paint. Try SherwinWilliams if you have one near you. It will cost about $25.00 a gallon or more. The old paint will act like a primer, be sure to sand the walls down to smooth it out. A palm sander with a 180 grit will work fine.
I think what everyone is repeating here is you need to use a light primer first; then paint over the primer with your final coat.
You need a primer like KILZ.

If it is really dark, then you would need to put a primer coat on first, then one to two coats of the paint color that you choose.
You need to put a primer over the dark color before you try painting over with a lighter color. A primer will work miracles and help your new, lighter color be 'true' (rather than changing some due to the darker color effecting it).

If you have any old stains or mildew to paint over, Killz does a good job with that. Be SURE to use it with ventilation and fans. It's wicked.

Someone at the paint store or Lowes or Home Depot or whereever you go for the primer will be able to help you select the primer that's right for the job.
