How much wall could 1 can of paint cover?

We need to paint an entire house (1824 sq. feet), but most of the house would be 1 color... so how many cans of paint would you need for 1 room? Like 11x11? Thanks a lot to all answers, and if you can recommend a good brand that crayon/smudges would wipe off of.How much wall could 1 can of paint cover?
I am a 37 year exprienced painter and approxamately 350 square feet per gallon of a good paint..no need to prime the dark color with a speacial primer..just put on 2 coats of the paitn you intend to do the finish with..Here when you figure out the footage..add to the footage about 30% for the second coat, for it will take a little less on the 2nd coat..NOW..HERE IS WHAT IS IMPORTANT FIGURING OUT THE TOTAL.. the footage you are speaking of I bet is the floor footage and not the wall footage...So unless we know heigth of wall..how many walls, partitions, walk in closet walls etc.... It would be real hard to tell you..for one house per sya that is 2000 square feet , footage space could take 25 gallons..and the next 2000 square foot house could only take 15...this all depends on heigth and amount of walls...for example..a 10x10 room would be 100 square foot of floor footage, but you need to multiply this floor footage by 8 if it has 8 foot ceilings..so it would be 800 square feet of wall space that you would actually be painting there...2 gallons would paint this room sufficiently of good paint..if it was the darker color then add 35% which would be an additional 250 feet in material..so then 3 gallons would work well here , plus plenty to touch up..You will have to measure each room this way to get wall footage..measure each wall and partitions too...I just did some figuring..if you totalled up JUST the exterior walls, and they were all 8 foot ceilings , this would be 14,592 sq feet of wall footage..approx..5 1/2 gallons of paint..now without the inner walls it will increase..but the average house of that size I would start with 15 gallons..purchase in 5 gallon containers..then get more as you need..Me being a retired contractor would more than likely (not a spelling teacher as i see how bad i type) would go ahead and purchase 25 gallons if alot of walls..but I would use the extra later somewhere..as a home owner..I would start out with 15 gallons then get more as you need..it is cheaper when you buy it in the 5';sHow much wall could 1 can of paint cover?
PCbeachrat gives excellent advice, but check all of your measurements accurately. A 10X10 room does not take 10wide X10 long X8high = 800 square feet worth of paint; it takes 10wideX8highX 4 walls=320 square feet worth of paint.


Except for the measurements, his advice is right on the money.


Most major brands use similar ingredients: SW, Behr, etc., and get the better grade, not the cheapest. You will find that satin washes better than flat. Check out www.paintquality.com

1 can of paint should do that size room...but keep in mind, the darker the color---the more coats of paint you will need.





I just painted a room (12 X 15---beige) with one gallon and it was just enough when finished after touchups and all.





Go with either satin or eggshell finish---semi-gloss or gloss shows imperfections and flat paint is almost impossible without alot of elbow grease to remove crayon etc.

An 11'x11' room given its got a 8' ceiling height will take 1 gallon of paint, you'll need to primer over the burnt orange because it will bleed thru the finish coat if its not primed first and let the primer dry thoroughly before applying the finish coat .For easy availability use Behr Premium Paint from the Home Depot it's really good paint . I would recommed at least 2 cans,maybe 3 it all so depends on the roller or brush your using.Some could soak up alot of paint I would ask some in the paint dept for their best results.You will also need a primer before you paint so you don't see what is there now.Basically any brand works fine even the one that cost the least they all work the same.
that depends on who paints the wall, how big the brush/roller is, and how much paint they use... so it depends, buy probably three cans for more and better coverage, and you could use the extra for touch up?!!?!
Approximately 200 to 400 sq. ft. per gallon on most products; it will be listed on the side of the can.





Be aware that for the darker room you'll want to prime it first.
I just painted my room which is i believe is either 10X10 or 11X11 and one gallon of paint provided one coat which worked very well. Good luck.
