Painting the walls of a room different colours....?

I am painting a room and want to make it look larger. Ive heard that if you paint one wall a slightly darker colour it can make the room look bigger.

My question is which wall do you paint darker?Painting the walls of a room different colours....?
What's the room used for?

The house we moved into was newly renovated and they'd painted the chimney breast in the main bedroom (a decent sized, light room of about 3.5m x 4m / 11ft x 13ft and with two large windows of about 1.5m x 1m) a kind of salmon colour, then the rest of the walls and ceiling white. This made no difference and I think made the room look worse as there was too much contrast between the colours.

In my experience, if you want to make a room look bigger use white for the ceiling - use white for any coving you have as well - and paint the walls a slightly off white, or a very light shade; something with only a hint of colour. Painting one wall a different colour from the rest may break up the shape of the room a bit and give the feeling of having ';two rooms in one'; (whatever that means) but I really don't think it will make much difference to your perception of that room's size.Painting the walls of a room different colours....?
the wall on which maximum natural light / sunlight falls - paint it dark or darker

and opposite wall - try to make it just plaint WHITE

and see the diff - you will feel the room is bigger

same way if you paint the other 2 walls white - pute white -it still looks fantastic - and bigger

but if you try to paint the cealing Darker - you will feel the height of the room is become less

all optical illusions
You or talking of a painting method called accent, rooms 10x10 really is 10x10 no matter what color. I know what people say and its very much acceptable my us painters.

I think many years ago a painter really started this rumor

There more such as put a shot of black into a gallon of white paint and it stays white longer. Okay you wish to lighten up a room.

So to accent your colors have to look good upside the other as they meet the longest wall where the light is coming in make that your lightest wall.

In you corner just square off at both ends and let dry.

Do your lightest color first than skip a wall and paint the next one as you did that one let dry.

Come back and paint the other two walls a enjoy you accent paint job.
Larger is subjective. Different is fact.

I've done this many times. The idea being ';different'; is a distraction, not an enlargement. Two colors at most, and if a darker color is the single wall then make it the short wall, or the wall with the most openings to lessen the effect of darker.

whichever one you want
I would paint the smallest wall darker. It will add depth,

and make the rest of the walls look brighter.
Well, a good tip is to paint the lower half of the room the darker shade and the upper half a lighter shade. This can be done if you're using similar colours, like beige and taupe. This effect will not work if you use totally different colours (like blue and red). It works and makes your room look much bigger. Trust me!
That's what is known as an accent wall. The effect isn't to make a room seem larger, but to make it cozier. The general rule is that light colors make a room look larger, dark colors make a room cozier. If a room is too light, it can become stark, and adding an accent wall is one solution to remedy a stark room.
I have painted many, many rooms and I have used a variety of colors, and it's true that a darker color can make the room look bigger, because it adds depth. I believe it would be the the wall theists on the side of the room your trying to extend in other words if your room is rectangle as you walk in paint the wall that you see as you walk in the room. Good luck I hope it works out.
