Is there a product I can paint onto an exterior wall to give the existing paintwork a ';chalky'; appearance?

I have heard about a product called 'lime-wash', but I'm not sure if this can be painted over existing paint, or if it has to be incorporated into fresh paint before being applied? Is there a product I can paint onto an exterior wall to give the existing paintwork a ';chalky'; appearance?

This website should answer your questions.

URGENT!!An extention of my previous question: What is the best fastest way to get paint of a wall.?

The pain is pealing and chipped and really nasty looking and i am concerned that if after we remove the loose stuff that we just paint that the indentations where the paint came off will show with the new paint on. How can we avoid this?URGENT!!An extention of my previous question: What is the best fastest way to get paint of a wall.?
Sand it smooth. Remove all paint that is loose then go over it with an 80 grit sand paper then a 220, lots of work, good luck to you.URGENT!!An extention of my previous question: What is the best fastest way to get paint of a wall.?
First you should find out why it's peeling ,is it water damage? close to a window or heater or just old paint? you should peel of as much of the loose paint as possible then buy sme pre-mixed pudy (the stuff they use to do drywall) and slap it over the patch of peeled paintoverlapping the edge of the peeled patch, smoth it out sand it and maybe a second coat san it out nicely then paint over it. Go to home depto or another hardware store and they can explain how to use the stuff better and show you the supplies you need. It won't cost much.
sand paper is the best on paint. go to lowe's or home depot. tell them your problem and they will give you the right sand paper and will tell you what to do, if you need to scrape it, repaint it, or whatever else they will help. well GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!!
After scraping off all of the loose paint, use sandpaper to smooth out the edges.
Scrape it and then sand it. Make sure you wear a respirator (sp). As some old paint contains lead and as you know that is bad for you.
The pain is pealing? It's ';The PAINT is PEELING.';
consider this rip the wall down, if it is a inside wall save your self alot of work and rip old wall out and put up new drywall faster cheaper less time consuming to work it. consider a 4 by 8 sheet of dry wall under 10 bucks and some plaster and sand paper to that of sanding and trying to get everything right. also the old paint may still peal do you want this or start fresh. new dry wall and primer and paint doesn't get better than that.
wallpepr first then paint over the wallpaper- plain white wallpaper will work unless you are painting the wall a dark color- in that case use darker wallpaper
I've had the same problem in my house, too. I took a flat razor blade and scraped off the globs and stuff. Then a light sanding all over, just to scuff up the paint a bit (you don't want to sand too deep because you may expose older lead-based paint) then wash with TSP and rinse well. Once the wall is dry, Use a 10-inch putty knife to apply a thin layer of drywall compound over the whole area. After it dries, you can sand out any inconsistancies, prime and paint. Take your time sanding to make sure you get it very flat. Oh, and wear a dust mask and close your airvents while sanding.

Works great and is much cheaper than ripping out the wall and safer than sanding old paint.

I have some sheetrock 1 wall gloss painted 3 walls an ceiling new sheetrock need to spray texture then paint ,?

1 wall gloss paint, 3 walls an ceiling new sheetrock? Question . how do i get spray on texture an paint to stick and stay to ALL areas??? Please it s my moms house, need I say more?I have some sheetrock 1 wall gloss painted 3 walls an ceiling new sheetrock need to spray texture then paint ,?
I assume you are just spraying texture on the ceiling. If that is the case, make sure you prime the bare drywall on the ceiling first. Spray texture is mixed with water, which will make it stick to the ceiling.

If you are going to spray texture on everything, I would prime everything. The gloss wall won't provide adequate adhesion for the texture.

  • How can I safely remove bird poop off of the wall without ruining the paint?

I have the easiest way to get bird poop of of everything is using one of the little hand help steamers you can buy at drug stores. There a lots of different brands and if you catch a sale you can get one for 25.00. They are a must for any bird owner! How can I safely remove bird poop off of the wall without ruining the paint?
Soapy water with a sponge or rag... First your going to want to try and get off as much as you can with a dry coarse towel. Then keep the wall wet and let it soak about 10 min. Use the sponge first then the washcloth and scrub the hard spots.

How can I safely remove bird poop off of the wall without ruining the paint?
yes, poop-off is the way to go. when i dont have that on hand, windex followed by a hot soapy sponge. im not too sure about the windex on all paints tho i am not knowledged in the ways of paint. try it on a little patch somewhere first?
Theres this thing called poop-off, you can buy it at many pet stores, including petco, and you just squirt some on, and rub it with the brush that comes with your purchse, and that pretty much does it
want to know how to remove bird poop from the walls, clip the birds wings carefully viola no more bird poop on the walls.... and its safer for the bird too.
You could try a special dropping spray at a pet store. It's called poop off and it dissolves the dropping.
Poop off works great is non-toxic to use around the birds as well.
the cheap way is hot soapy water let it soak and it will come off I used gloves and it came off ok
hot water and some soap and a little bit of elbow grease!
    Try a high pressure hose.

What is the best way to remove crayon markings from a wall without taking off the paint?

People gave too many repeatitive answers, here is one that doesn't require Mr. Clean.

Take a hair dryer, and have some very absorband tissues or paper towels ready in hand. Blow the wall in HIGH, and the crayon should melt, as soon as it liquidfies, blot it dry with the tissue. Repeat a few times. What is the best way to remove crayon markings from a wall without taking off the paint?
There's a product out there called ';goo-gone'; It works pretty well and doesn't take the paint off the walls. What is the best way to remove crayon markings from a wall without taking off the paint?
mr clean magic eraser it works great i use them all the time for that exact purpose
take a blunt knife and scratch on it
Oh my! This is what I do with my walls every two weeks!

My kids just love to decorate the house walls using their crayons, even if I keep giving them papers and coloring books for their use. hehehe

What I do is to use sponge and powdered laundry soap and just clean the walls. The paint that I have on walls is white, fortunately, so even if I suspect that the paint is coming off because the soap suds look so white, after I dry off the wall, the paint stays the same.

I use a slightly hardened sponge (not the ordinary soft sponge because it will take a longer time to take away the crayons) and just powdered laundry soap and water.

good luck and kisses to your kids!

    P.S.

I haven't used MAGIC ERASER before, so if I see one, I'd try it soon and make life easier!

My daughter is two and does plenty of drawings on the walls with crayon. I used Mr cleans magic eraser and it took the crayon right off.
MAGIC ERASER that works I GOT kids who wright on the walls and it works really really good.
Those new white sponges from Mr. Clean work really well.
MAGIC ERASER tried it and it works wonders
Believe me (WD-40) works!! It rocks, plus it has hundred other uses.....
    Magic Eraser-Mr. Clean

Its terrific.. You'll find yourself scrubbing everything.

Just add water.. No soaps or sprays needed
If you have a flat paint on your wall you should paint over it, because it will look funny in the spot were the crayon markings were after you try to clean the spots( trust me i know). but if your paint job is much better than flat paint then try Murphy oil soap and warm water. This is a old soap that has been around forever and works on just about anything.
Bulldoze the whole house. This will keep the paint on the wall yet...ha ha!

You should try Purell or a similar hand sanitizer. Those often remove many marks immediately--including Sharpie marks. I've not had experience with removing crayons with Purell, but it's worth a try.

If not, use a lot of Palmolive. It's a good tough soap. Best of luck!
    Remove the wall.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Costs a couple bucks, but it's money well spent. Lasts quite a bit and can be used on multiple surfaces. Removes bath, sink and tile grunge, and soap scum as well.
Baby oil. For some reason it lifts the wax and removes it really well. If that doesn't work, try peanut butter, yes peanut butter.

Painting white over blue wall- Diaster?!?

After having my bedroom blue for quite some time, I decided to paint it all white. Thinking it was a simple task, I bought some white emulsion and a roller and started to paint over the blue! However, the blue is showing through in patches even after painting over it several times.

At this point, I searched online for the reason and read some articles about painting over darker paint and some suggested to use a 'Primer'.

    What can I do now?

Can I just paint the primer all over the white paint?

Help :(Painting white over blue wall- Diaster?!?
Yes, you can paint the primer over the new paint. You might want to consider using a primer like Kilz which is made to hide everything on a wall before you paint. I once covered a streak of red on a white wall with Kilz, and then painted the wall light blue. No problem.Painting white over blue wall- Diaster?!?
The cheapest way would be to paint on pva after a couple of hours you can safely emulsion over. PVA from Wicks or B%26amp;Q.
yes just paint the primer over and then continue with your white paint..Use a light coloured primer though
You could use lining paper to wallpaper the room. It will be a parchment colour then and you emulsion over that.

The advantages are that it will be a very smooth finish.
    go and buy wallpaper instead
man Ive been painting for 20 years just primer the wall completely then paint . '; several coats'; should have covered it. What do you mean by white emulsion? and yes paint primer right over paint anymore specific Qs just email me through answers good luck from TEXAS
First off, I don't know how strong is the blue on the wall. Sky blue or Bic ballpoint pen ink blue.

First, you need to determine where those patches are and why. Is it places where the hands have been alot(near light switches or electrical outlets) or door edges. Your skin has oils which impart onto those surfaces. Painting over the oil, the paint(if it is water based tends to ';not want to go there'; as oil and water do not mix.......so if anything, it will go over that area thinner as the oils are continually trying to push the water out of the way. You would see it as ';beading'; on a car for wax does the same thing.

If those are the areas, all you can do is wait until dry(as what is written on the can) scuff up the surface with some 120 sandpaper and give another coat on those areas. But it has to be applied over a dry coat of paint - not semi wet.

If the blue is bleeding thru the paint(in that it looks like the blue dissolved with the white wet paint and is coming thru as a mix of blue and white.....that is a different problem. (this would more apply to the Bic blue walls. More likely that is concentrated colorant. You need to stop the colorant from progressing. You need a ';stain stopper'; such as KILZ in a spray can. which you apply over the problem area. It will be like spraying on a whitish varnish onto a door(not so much that the Kilz runs, just put on a decent coat. Let that dry an hour on a warm day. That will have stopped the colorant bleed thru in its tracks. Just paint right over with the wall white. It may take 2. Always plan for 2 in any paint job,

If you include the primer, then 3.

Primer is used mainly on unpainted surfaces such as bare wood or unpainted other surfaces. It is the binder between paint and the surface. Wait till that fully dries, so you can run your hand over the surface and feel the surface to be sure that it is smooth to the touch(otherwise out comes the sandpaper to smoothen it a bit - 120 is a good grit in general to have for walls) The first color coat is just that , the first. Wait till that dries to the touch again(overnight is the best) You should not be able to scratch it off with your fingernails if you did the ';blackboard thing';. If it comes off, it ain't hard yet. Or if it seems soft in spots, those are problem areas right off(suspect oil behind the latex) You need to stabilize that(use some Kilz) .

This is why washing the walls down clean on a previous paint job is so important.

The second color coat is applied when the first coat is dry hard. The second coat covers over any thin spots or misses you may have done in when applying the first coat(besides that, dents and imperfections in the wall show up better in the color coat than on plain white - which is normally the primer color. So you still have a chance to fix the minor dents and dings.......before the second coat.

Now, some colors cover over better than others.....so too for brands of paint. A cheap paint is like water, and a more expensive paint is less like water and more like paint. So, whether your wall takes 3 coats or 5 really doesn't matter. Except you could, after the second when it should all be the same, go over the areas that stick out with an additional coat just there to hid the spot. Wait till that dries and then do the whole wall again. The idea is to get an even finish top to bottom left to right.
Just go over what you have with primer. Do two coats to be safe. Be patient and let it dry in between coats, that is important! Once it is fully dry, you should be able to paint the walls anything you want :)

    Always always use primer..
Did something similar a few weeks ago. Three coats did the job for me.
    YEP SURE CAN..

Just get some stuff called Kilz from home depot or lowes and paint right over what you just did..let it dry for about half and hour and then paint over with the color you want..you probably only need one coat since you said the blue is just showing through some.
Kilz paint is great ,try the primer then start over with the paint
Am i right in assuming you bought your paint from B%26amp;Q or Wickes or such like?

If this is the case then the paint they sell is very weak and watery - even their Dulux range.

The only thing you can do is go to a professional paint or decorating supplier and ask them for Dulux Trade. You will find it is much thicker and covers better. Paint one or two coats with this and you will not see any more blue guaranteed.

One more tip - leave it a day to dry out before you paint 2nd coat. If you paint 2-3 coats in one day it will not work as well.

Do not use a primer at this stage as the first coat you painted acted as a primer.

I would not use PVA on the walls as it will form a skin.

Using cheap paint will cost more in the long run.

    Have fun!

  • Is it necessary to prime a white wall that was painted a year ago before painting a new color?

We pucharsed our townhouse a year ago. Prior to moving in, the house was freshly painted by professional painters with a white or off-white flat finish. We were told the lady who used to live there smoked in the house; but we've never smelt anything from the day we moved in. The job, in our opinion, was quite professional and the walls are in great shape even now. Just the wrong color.

We are now getting ready to paint a light beige on the walls in the same flat finish. We have received different reports (including from the actual paint manufacturer) of whether we need to prime or not. The only ';bad areas'; are a wall that used to have shelves on it and now you can see the lines where they painted around. Do we need to prime all our walls, or just this one, or none of them? Any help would be great. Is it necessary to prime a white wall that was painted a year ago before painting a new color?
From my experience the white flat walls of paint you have now is just that. Primer only. If the walls have no smoke or oily finger prints on them, you should be able to just paint right over it with no problem. I would use a primer only after washing things down where there could have been kiddy fingers around the doors and door facings to be safe.

I would sand the area where the shelves used to be, prime it with a couple of coats of primer, then paint right over it.

Flat paints do not show up any imperfections in the drywall, however it is hard to keep clean and shows every scuff mark and finger print.

Eggshell is a bit better but does show bits here and there. Latex satin is a beautiful sheen but it does show up some imperfections should there be any at all in your case. Satin is easier to wash and keep cleaner than the others unless you go with oils. Not recommended though. Hope this helps. Just let the paint dry for a couple of days before you try to move anything close to it. Keep good ventilation and dry conditions as much as possible. Heat or the AC will dry the moisture faster for you. Enjoy the fruits of your labor and the colors you enjoy! Good luck! DonnaIs it necessary to prime a white wall that was painted a year ago before painting a new color?
You should be fine without priming. Priming is absolutely necessary when painting over old oil paint, changing the colour dramatically, or if the new colour is red. In this case I don't see any reason why you would do so.

Enamel is a good choice for trim, doors, cupboards, and other areas that get a lot of wear, but it's not necessary for walls.
Just lightly sand down the area where the paint built up..where they painted around the shelves. Make sure you can run your hand over that area after you've sanded it and it is totally smooth. Then you do not have to prime at all; as long as you are using a good brand of paint. Not cheap, cheap paint.
Definately no need to prime. Enamel is simply a term used to depict the hardness of the paint. You do not need an enamel on walls. You might want to spot-prime the areas where the shelves were, but even that is not neccessary as long as you lay the paint on thick enough.
No it isn't. If you were covering stains or a darker color or if you were painting a darker color then maybe but not for changing it a few shades.
no need to prime walls just give them two coats
Having purchased it, and knowing it will be yours for a while at least, I think it's a good idea to prime all the walls prior to painting. If it were a rental I'd suggest that it's no big deal. But for a nice looking finish that's durable and consistant it's always a good idea to prime first. Often times there can be blemishes on the existing finish that won't get noticed by the eye, but can certainly affect final product. Priming isn't a must, and isn't the cheapest way to go. But surely the safest. Happy Painting!

play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find something that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family %26amp; color name, the ';painted'; rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I think it would look great if you paint the whole room a light shade like ';tea light'; (# 7681). It will warm up the room, + set off the colors of the beach beyond. If you've got your heart set on an accent wall, then I would paint it slightly darker, like ';stonebriar'; (# 7693) or ';relic bronze'; (# 6132).

Try soft scrub or one of those magic erase sponges. I love the sponges, and they really work!

I want to paint over a wall mural. Mural is very dark paint. Do I need to use special sealer or paint?

Primer is recommended so you can get better coverage, If your going with a specific color, ask the paint store to tint your primer so you can get better coverage and use less paint for top coats.

If its latex, just use ordinary primer, you don't need to get high end primer, just make sure the label says Hi Hide Primer. If its oil, use Zinnser High Hide primer, ( http://www.zinsser.com/product_detail.as鈥?/a> )

Bullseye1.2.3. is designed for stains (like smoke, tannin bleeds, water stains, etc) not for hi hide.

Kilz is another multi surface primer ( http://www.kilz.com/pages/default.aspx?N鈥?/a> )

or commercial/painters line of primers are usually hi hide because they want quick and easy coverage to get their job done. Check at your local paint store. Just make sure it says primer not sealer (sealer is a preparation coat for bare surfaces, usually drywall, metals, etc)I want to paint over a wall mural. Mural is very dark paint. Do I need to use special sealer or paint?
    1. Wash your wall first with liquid TSP. Don't use the powder kind, as it's toxic, is harder to mix and will need to be rinsed off. Let it dry completely.

    2. Prime your wall with a good quality primer. My favorite is Bull's Eye 1-2-3, as it covers most everything, is quick to dry and is latex based (believe it or not!). Primer is a mixute of glue and paint, sticking great to the wall to cover and also giving your new paint a good gripping surface. Here's the link:

    http://www.zinsser.com/product_detail.as鈥?/a>

    3. Paint your wall the color you wish. If you're planning on painting a bright (pink), dark (blue) or vibrant color (red), you'll want to tint your primer to match the color of your paint. Using primer means you need less paint (which costs more than primer). It also helps your color to remain true, instead of soaking up a tinting of the color underneath.

Enjoy your new space!I want to paint over a wall mural. Mural is very dark paint. Do I need to use special sealer or paint?
Generally two coats of good quality paint will do it. Be sure and let the first coat dry thoroughly (12 to 24 hrs) before applying the 2nd coat.
Before using a quality paint, apply 1 or 2 coats of KILZ
Go to lowes or depot and get regular wall primer and put 2 thin coats on. It`s that ease.
at least a primer before paint.

ask at the store where you get paint they would know more.
1.2.3 bulseye or bin 123 or kilz

  • Would I need to prime my walls before painting crimson over burnt orange?

Have you ever painted red before?

If you don't prime, your problem isn't going to be color bleed-through as much as it will be that red doesn't cover well unless you do several coats. Needing 3 or more coats of red to get coverage is about the norm ... 6 or 7 is not unheard of.

If you prime first (and use a primer tinted as closely as possible to your TOPCOAT color, crimson), you can probably eliminate a few topcoats and you'll achieve a more even finish on the new paint.Would I need to prime my walls before painting crimson over burnt orange?
No, it should be fine.Would I need to prime my walls before painting crimson over burnt orange?
No. Since burnt orange already has red in it, it will work fine. The only time you really need to prime before painting red is if the walls are white - then you would prime with a red-tinted primer or if the walls lean towards very dark colors such as black, blue, etc.

You will however, need at least two coats of paint to make your color true.

Oh... and if your burnt orange is oil paint and you're planning on painting with latex or acryllic paint, then yes, you'll need to prime with an OIL based primer before you can paint latex on top.

It's a good idea if you want the color to be true. If you don't mind the shade changing a bit, just go right over it.
I was a painters assistant for several years, and my boss always said that it's best to prime a wall before painting if it's anything but white or off white colors. Just a precautionary measure. Sometimes underlying colors bleed through, so it's best to prime a wall first before putting on a fresh new color.
I don't think you need to because the wall already has a coat of paint. If you where to paint on the drywall directly, then I would suggest you prime it first to really get that crimson color on that wall.
you should always prime to prevent color bleeding through
Behr makes a paint now that has primer built into the shade of paint you want, eliminating the extra coats...but yes you should prime it if you go with basic paint.

    %26gt;=)
I would say no because the crimson (red) color is darker than the burnt orange. But you will need at least two coats to cover it nicely. Or just buy the paint with the primer already inside the paint to minimize steps.
just in case, why don't you get the primer/paint paint. if the crimson is significantly darker, i think you could, but do two layers.

How do you know that you've applied enough paint primer to a wall?

I'm moving out of my apartment and have to paint the walls white. I've applied two coats of primer (latex) so far over medium-blue, and you can still see some blue beneath it (it's not solid white, I mean).

Do I need to keep applying primer until the wall is solid white, or can I now proceed to 1-2 coats of white paint? How do you know that you've applied enough paint primer to a wall?
All the primer is for is to cover or seal, if you have two coats on that is plenty. Go ahead and add your finish paint over it, it is thicker and will cover the blue tint you still see.How do you know that you've applied enough paint primer to a wall?
First, applying a primer depends on the color that you are trying to cover. You mentioned medium blue so I would think that one coat is all you need. If you were covering up deeper color then you may need two coats. Even seeing a little bit of blue, you should be ok to go ahead and apply the paint. Also, next time make sure to purchase a good rated primer. Ask for assistance at the paint store, home depot, lowes, etc and they should be able to tell you which primer works best. I have attached a link and should give you good guidance on primers.

I have paint cracking on the wall near the window?

i have paint cracking and being pink and moldy near my window. waht is the way to fix it?I have paint cracking on the wall near the window?
First you need to find out why it happened. Otherwise it will come back. Maybe your roof gutters are leaking onto the wall near there. Maybe the trim around a window near there has rotted and rain is running in there. Get that done first.

Dig out any plaster that has gone soft and powdery and replace it with fresh Spackle. Then wash down the area with bleach to kill any mold and put on a prime coat of paint. Finally repaint to match the rest of the wall.

Does anyone have any creative ideas on how to paint squares on a wall?

i have lime green walls and am looking for ideas on how to paint pink squares on one or more of the walls. i only have one quart of paint so the squares can't be too big. thanks for any ideas!!!Does anyone have any creative ideas on how to paint squares on a wall?
I think a configuration of many different would be cool. The best way to do that would be to use painters tape, tape up the squares and paint. If you use the tape then you will get small borders around each square in the green color. I would do a configuration in the center of the wall with different size squares and rectangles. If you really need help go to a large home improvement store and ask how. Lowes, Home Depot, or Kent (in Canada). Good Luck. Remember it is just paint, and if you make a mistake you can paint over it.Does anyone have any creative ideas on how to paint squares on a wall?
just do one wall three colors in squares and have the other three walls each one of those colors to paint squares just tape it off for example in a baby girls's room we painted one wall brown pink and beige and then ech one of those walls those colors it was sooo cute!!!
It would be cute to do a small square in the top corner on one side and gradually make them larger as you go down the wall to the opposite bottom corner. Only thing i can think to do is get a tape measure measure how big you want on a sheet of paper cut it out tape it up on the wall and then just a smidge on the outside of the taped paper put another row of tape and remove your paper and tape. Good luck it sounds cute.
Go to Behr Paint, they alot of different techniques. Better Homes and Gardens, or HGTV.com.
Obviously you also want as cheap as possible ideas, too.

Cut out open squares from paper so you can paint inside of the open 'holes'. Painters tape is the best but money is also an option - - take scotch tape and stick, remove, stick, remove on your jeans or arm so it is not super sticky to hold your open squares on wall. Paint inside squares, remove your form.

Can I paint over the vinyl wall panels in a mobile home? I don't like the color it currently is.?

Has anyone tried this? Will it look terrible? Will the paint stick? Any advice? Can I paint over the vinyl wall panels in a mobile home? I don't like the color it currently is.?
These are good. If you want to go one step further, remove the batten strips, mud and sand the seams, then prime and paint. Can I paint over the vinyl wall panels in a mobile home? I don't like the color it currently is.?
thoroughly clean with TSP. rinse and dry. use a very high quality primer that has excellent adhesion property. dont go cheap on the primer, or the job will be a waste. when the primer is fully cured, you can paint anything you like over it.
The question isn't can you paint over them, of course you can. The question is will the paint stick. First you need to CLEAN the walls. The walls in homes seem to attract dirt and debris. If there was a smoker in the house it makes it that much worse. Has anyone fried a chicken or steak in the house? That's more residue on the walls. Get a GOOD commercial cleaner and scrub the walls thoroughly. Then go to a paint store and ask about an appropriate primer and paint to finish the job. Follow the directions to the letter and you should be home free...
I painted over the vinyl window frame in my kitchen. You'll need to use oil-based paint. It looks good and it sticks well.
sure. just put on a primer paint and let it dry, then paint over in the color of your choice.

  • Remove Grape Juice From Painted Wall?

We just moved into our new home and I was moving boxes around. Long story short I spilt a cup of grape juice from the wall and I want to remove it without destroying the paint. Any suggestions????Remove Grape Juice From Painted Wall?
Guaranteed to work-Mr Clean magic eraser. Amazing. It does everything!Remove Grape Juice From Painted Wall?
Hydrogen Peroxide will remove any ORGANIC stain, including grape juice %26amp; red wine. Buy Peroxide when it's on sale 2 for $1. Put one bottle in the medicine cabinet %26amp; one bottle in the laundry area. Pour it on wet or dry fabric, let sit for 15 min, then if needed you can do it again. Then launder as usual, but if you're cleaning spots from carpeting or upholstery, no rinsing is needed as it leaves no residue (it works with oxygen ';fizzing'; out the stain). Sometimes it's best to put the peroxide in a well marked spray bottle %26amp; spray it on the carpet. Always ';spot test'; a small area first!

---%26gt; Peroxide removes coffee, hot chocolate, blood %26amp; many other things too!
If the paint has an eggshell or slight gloss finish the Magic Eraser will do great. If the paint is flat however, it will come off with the eraser...

Can you painting over polyurethane on walls?

I saw on those HGTV %26amp; TLC shows how you can paint your walls with polyurethane %26amp; make stripes, but i was nervous to do it because i didnt know if i would be able to paint over it if we moved or wanted to change the color. does anyone know if a primer would work or anything else? Can you painting over polyurethane on walls?
Sure you can. Ask at the home improvement store for a high quality primer that is designed to go over glossy paint. The new paint will slide off of a glossy surface like polyurethane so you need a good primer. Good luck!! : )

How much surface area (wall) does a gallon of paint cover? Also recommend which brand is good?

I want to paint my apartment which 900 sq ft...how many cans of 1 gallon paint is needed? How much surface area (wall) does a gallon of paint cover? Also recommend which brand is good?
There are a couple of brands of paint that I like. American Tradition (Lowe's main paint brand) is good. Behr, from Home Depot is pretty good. Porter Paints has pretty good paint. And finally Pittsburgh paint is pretty good. I don't recommend getting a flat paint. Flat paint is cheaper, but it is really worth the extra money to get a Satin finish paint. It should tell you on the can of paint how many square feet it will cover, or ask the person in the paint department when you buy your paint. It also partly depends on the texture of your wall and the color you are trying to paint over. Some colors are harder to paint over than others.

Also remember to get the correct thickness of roller. The more texture your wall has, the thicker of roller you need so it is easier to paint. How much surface area (wall) does a gallon of paint cover? Also recommend which brand is good?
One gallon per room depending on the color. If it's an apartment I'm guessing it's a white or off white color since most managers don't allow color. Be sure to check your lease. If this is the case, three gallons should be fine.
depends on what kind of wall it's covering, the paint currently on it..and the color you plan on painting.

most paints that you get from any hardware store, or even walmart are going to be good enough to get the job done..
This will vary depending on the paint. The area which can be covered will be shown on the side of the can.
Are you going 2 coats? If so thats 1800 sq. ft which means you will need 5 gallons. 400 sq feet a gallon.

Don't buy 2.5 gallons buy 3 if only going 1 coat, cuz qts cost darn near much as a gallon.
All of my painting jobs I all ways use BEHR brand paint. Unless their is a severe color change one coat will do. You will need to look on the can for coverage area, but it don't see it taking more than 3 gal. Don't forget to paint the ceiling first. Good Luck
Most 1 gal paint cans cover 400 sq ft, so you would need about 3. This will depend on if you are having to apply multiple coats. As far as brands go, you get what you pay for. Pay more money, and you will have better paint coverage and longevity.

Hi everybody. As i said i will study in university and i will have mine own house so what would be the best color to paint my room.ThanksI will study In University. What color i should paint the wall?
Fresh colours are calm and non-distracting.

I'd have white walls with a duck egg blue ceiling and cream carpet.

You could also have pale yellow, pale pink, magnolia etc.I will study In University. What color i should paint the wall?
    Darker clear blue.

Do i have to use primer if i am painting my walls.?

i am painting my walls an wondering if i have to use primer and they r pretty dirty.Do i have to use primer if i am painting my walls.?
if they are really dirty, or if you're changing the color from a dark color to a lighter colore and especially if there is nicotine from cigarette smoke present, then, yes. it would be recomended to use primer. primer sticks to almost anything, and then the paint sticks to the primer.Do i have to use primer if i am painting my walls.?
It depends on what color your wall is... if it's something soft and close to gray I would say skip the primer, but if you have bright red or something then definately use primer. It also depends on how expensive your paint is. If it's really cheap paint, the color wont come out right without primer.
It is best to use a primer to cover up any dirt that may bleed through. Also, if you are painting a lighter color than what you have, the primer will cover up the darker color and you will have to use less paint.
depends, if you are going from a light color to a dark color then no, but if vise versa then yes.

    http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;鈥?/a>
the smart thing to do is to use primer, it seals the other paint out, and it gives u a good base to start with so ur color looks good on the wall, and will actually look like the color its supposed to!!!
Yes you should use primer, it will make the paint stand out and be alot more bolder, and will last alot longer, i reccomend KELZ. I think thats how you spell it.
You dont HAVE to use primer, but if the walls are dirty, this will give a base coat and help seal the paint to the walls. It will also help any current spots from seeping through.
You do not HAVE to but if you need a good descent professional

job then you will HAVE to used primer on that DIRTY wall!.

Short and direct to the point.
Wash, rinse, dry and Prime....highly recommended. (I know it's a pain).
yes you should for the best results..

you might want to get a soapy sponge and clean them first :)
u dont have to but u need to clean the wall and paint it twice wit the same color

What is the best way to put posters on a wall without having the paint on the wall coming off?...?

...and without poking holes in the wall? What is the best way to put posters on a wall without having the paint on the wall coming off?...?
Get some Hold-Tu. You pinch off a bit and roll it in a ball and put it on the back of your posters. It wont damage your walls or your posters. When you are ready to change posters, just pull it off the wall and remove the Hold-Tu.What is the best way to put posters on a wall without having the paint on the wall coming off?...?
I think the brand is 3M, they make these adhesive hooks that you can safely put on your wall. When I had posters to hang up I used the sticky tabs that came with the hooks to put them up. I thought they worked great because they didn't ruin my walls or my poster. Just cut the tabs in half and place them in the corners.
I use to use a staple %26amp; staple them @ least the holes fr. the staple are small
I used the generic clear tape. Roll it into about a 2 inch roll and stick it onto the poster and to the wall. The adhesive isn't strong enough to pull the paint off and it still holds well. Hope this helps...
Hold-Tu is a remarkable product it's reusable and doesn't leave a mess on either the wall or the poster.

  • Ok to use hair dryer to speed up paint drying process? (paint is on kitchen wall - regular indoor paint)?

There is a yes and no to the hair dryer. Paint stores use hair dryers to quickly dry small paint samples, latex paint in particular. However this works on small samples only. If you expose the paint to too much heat, you cause what is known as mudcracking, when the surface of the paint dries faster than the bottom and ends up creating a dry lakebed look. You also run the risk of causing the paint to bubble or actually burn if you expose it to enough heat. On a large area a hairdryer is pretty useless, the amount of effort you will put will not be worth it. If you are using latex paint you run the risk of loosing adhesion on the wall surface by heating, it might possibly peel, not immediately, but it will eventually. Alkyd or oil paint needs to penetrate into a surface and fast drying it with high heat will prevent that, again possibly causing peeling.

Some things you can do to speed the process are:

1.) using a dehumidifier. A dehumidifer draws moisture out of the air, in turn this will give dryer air to pull the water medium out of latex paint, speeding its dry without risk. Dehumidifiers will not work on alkyd/oil paint.

2.) Ventilation: The more air you give paint the more 'medium' is pulled out of it. The medium is what is used in the paint water, oil, etc. The better the airflow the more fresh air is provided and the faster it can dry. Open a window (if its raining, there is too much moisture in the air and neither paint will dry), use fans to get air motion. Fans must be used to pull the air out of the room not blow directly into it. By pulling it out its getting rid of medium, and not kicking up dust and debris. You can also use your central air if you have one, it helps, but only if it has a built in dehumidifer.

3.) Temperature: Paint will not dry when it gets cold, as a golden rule if its too cold for you, its too cold for the paint to dry. Pumping the temperature up helps, but even if you make the kicthen a sweat box, you still need airflow to get the medium soaked air out.

    Hope I helped. Good Luck.

P.S. Latex paint takes roughly 6 hours to dry, work your day around that, paint in the morning, leave a windo cracked open, and go to out or too work. When you come home its already dry.Ok to use hair dryer to speed up paint drying process? (paint is on kitchen wall - regular indoor paint)?
no you will risk streaks in your paint finish if you have a dehumidifier that really speeds things upOk to use hair dryer to speed up paint drying process? (paint is on kitchen wall - regular indoor paint)?
No good. The paint underneath will remain wet and you will only be drying the outter paint. Just have to let it dry itself.
No, use an oscillating fan in the room.
    why the he-l not??
I'm assuming you have a small space to dry. If so, sure it is ok to use a hairy dryer, but a box fan would work much better, faster and cover the entire area. Plus you don't have to ';man'; a fan.
no the paint will run.do you have a couple of fans you can put in the kitchen and turn on that will do the trick and help the drying time.do not use a hair dryer.
No. that is ok if your are willing to stand there and blow each little section! How about an electric floor fan? Seems that would be less trouble and cover more area.

Is it possible to wash a wall that has been painted with a water based paint without damaging it?

My walls are really dirty because I babysit a lot. lol there are hand prints, crayon pictures, and lots of really dirty spots. Is there a way that I can wash it? If so please explain the process. Is it possible to wash a wall that has been painted with a water based paint without damaging it?
You can wash your walls. What it looks like afterward depends on the quality of the paint that was used. Don't use an oil product, like Murphy's. It will need to be rinsed thoroughly or it will leave residue behind. Use hot water and a cleaner like Mr. Clean or $pic and $pan. Start at the bottom of the wall and work your way up. That sounds backwards, but if you start at the top, the detergent dripping through the dirty wall will leave streaks that won't come off. Hope this helps. Is it possible to wash a wall that has been painted with a water based paint without damaging it?
If you have crayon on your walls, you will need to purchase a product like ';goof-off'; or ';goo-gone'; to get rid of the crayon. You will never be able to paint over crayon. (trust me, I learned that the hard way). If you want to start with removing the grime that kids tend to leave on walls, use ';Murphy's oil soap';. It is a great cleaner that is very gentle on painted surfaces. You can buy each of the products that I have mentioned at Walmart.
You can't wash water based paint with water - it just dilutes it so you'll have pale patches where the paint has kind of washed off. I swear by microfibre cloths, which pick up dirt at an amazing rate and don't need any chemicals. You could try one either dry, or barely damp. But I still think the rubbing would take off the paint. The thing you're supposed to do, though I've not tried it, is rub with stale bread! Why not wash off all the prints, spots and pictures and repaint those areas?
Yes, water based paint is only ';water soluble'; while it is wet. Once it has dried, it can withstand cleaning with mild soap and a wet sponge.

What's the best inexpensive (interior) wall paint?

Glidden. It's sold by The Home Depot %26amp; it's about $20 per gallon. What's the best inexpensive (interior) wall paint?
Any of the standard brands at home improvement stores (like Behr at Home Depot). Lowe's and Dixieline actually stock Valspar, which is a pretty good paint. It's a little more expensive. But, it covers better than the really cheap stuff. And, the best paint to get is at the specialty paint stores (Sherwin Williams, Dunn Edwards, Frazee, etc.).

Basically, the more you pay for paint, the less you use, because the better paints cover better. You then have to use less for each coat and you need less coats or touch-ups. So, if a gallon of crappy paint costs $25 a gallon while a gallon of good paint costs $40, but you use half as much of the good stuff (only one coat, for example, as opposed to two coats for the cheap stuff), then the more expensive paint is actually more cost effective. What's the best inexpensive (interior) wall paint?
inexpensive is relevant to what? longevity, cleanability...or just cheap to buy... a cheap paint will make more work and not cover as well as something in a little higher price bracket.

get a mid grade eggshell (sheen, not color) acrylic wall paint from any local paint store will do the trick but paint is no longer five dollars a can, expect to pay something like 20 or so dollars a gallon.
Another CHEAP alternative is to look for ';OOPS'; paint .All stores make mistakes when mixing. Some of the best paint stores will sell oops for $5.00 a gallon. Really wise to do, unless you're REALLY fussy.

How can I cover a stain on wall made with dishsoap - paint or primer won't cover it?

Ahhh, the joys of my autistic son. One day he took our dial foaming hand soap and dripped it all down our walls. We tried painting over it, didn't work. Then we tried the Kiltz primer, then painting and the soap stilled showed through with streak marks. How can I cover a stain on wall made with dishsoap - paint or primer won't cover it?
With all due respect to your son; and hopefully ';Ah the Joys';,,,was meant in the most loving sense (no offense)

I want to assume you scrubbed/rinsed any residue. I'm also curious about the substance of the KILZ... OIL/Latex???

I also want to assume you have the finish color?

Scrub; sand if need be and use KILZ or ZINZER ';OIL'; based primer. Those; once dry; accept ANY paint formultaion you choose.

No offense again; but you might channel this effort by your son; in some ';artistic'; way, NOT on walls. I'm sure you're aware of that already anyway. I am curious too, with all due respect. Does he show any Savant tendencies?

Steven WolfHow can I cover a stain on wall made with dishsoap - paint or primer won't cover it?
Hide the stain either with a painting or furniture
if you've painted over the area already and it didn't stick you may have to sand it down and wash the area with TSP and make sure the TSP is completely washed off the wall
Unfortunately .soap is soap %26amp; kids is kids.

If the walls have a flat paint on them , fair chance the soap seeped into the drywall beneath.

    All may not be lost.

Try damp washing the area %26amp; if the paint %26amp; primer comes off the streaked areas it is a good thing.

Once exposed, follow up with a solvent /degreaser like acetone to break up the oils in the soap.

If it is working ,there should be no discoloration %26amp; any sanding should leave clean dry dust,

If that dries it out, sand it down %26amp; re spackle w/ the newer quick drying ';plastic'' compound , then re seal %26amp; paint.

';Someone'; in my house got Murphys Oil soap on a wall %26amp; I got away with that method.

Had to scrape down to expose the bare core of the drywall

in spots where it really soaked in..

    Hope that helps.

    Splatter painting one wall.?

Hey I want to splatter paint one wall of my room what is the easiest, coolest, and most fun way of splatter painting with biggish splots. Also what is the best way to cover EVERYTHING. help?Splatter painting one wall.?
Splatter paint wall, to cover everything around, would be best to use large rolls of plastic sheets, use carpenters masking tape to hold around edges of wall being painted and extend out from wall,

if you are using more than one colour, you could start with sponge to spread base layer of multi colors, before splashing,

then how you want to splatter paint is up to you, you could use wide brush to throw streaks on wall, you could fill balloons with small amount of color and air, then burst with pins against wall, or use a nurf sponge ball soaked with paint and toss, or use exhaust from vacuum hose and spray dots all over, or place a thick layer quickly on wall with brush, and use vacuum hose or compressed air to spread up and around like branches, if you have air compressor and air brush that could be used, if you have access to paint ball gun, that could be used,

use window spray bottles or dish soap bottles to spray with, thin with water, or poke a hole in lid of plastic pop bottle, or some ketchup and salad dressing containers have lids with holes to pour through, cloth rags, cotton balls, ball of wool knitting thread, use the plastic sheet on floor to drop paint on and then press up against wall, use all methods,

  • How do you strip wall paper from the wall in preparation to paint?

Buy a steam wallpaper stripper - when we bought our house (which was built in 1929), the entire place was covered in PAINTED wallpaper, which 3 layers of wallpaper in the ceilings in the living rom %26amp; dining room. We stripped the entire house without chemicals - just this steamer. It's easy, you might want to buy a tool that marks the wallpaper - it's called a scorer (not necessary but helps) - makes little lines in the wallpaper so the steam gets under better. Score your walls, let the steamer warm up until the water is boiling and place on the wallpaper for a couple seconds, scrape off and move into the next chunk! Happy renovating! How do you strip wall paper from the wall in preparation to paint?
there is a solution that you can buy to help with this messy featHow do you strip wall paper from the wall in preparation to paint?
i remove it slowly so that there is no spot , which may appear on the new paint
A new bold wall is their first we mix a whit he cement %26amp; after that we should strip wall paper from the wall be to be paint
use a sponge to get it wet then it should be easy to peel off
They have these things you can run over wallpaper that put lots of tiny holes in it. Ask about it at any hardware or home improvement store.

Then spray warm water on it and let it sit for a few minutes. Let it get good and soggy. Then take a putty knife and scrape it off. Depending on how good a job was done by the original paperer, it may just peel off.
use baby oil. that sould take out anything
Warm water. Apply the water to the wallpaper with a wet sponge so it soaks in. Then peal away. After you have removed all the wallpaper, paint the walls with a layer of primer first. This will protect the walls and prevent the paint from chipping and peeling off.
Score the wallpaper so you can get moisture in to it, I just redone two bathrooms and I put hot water and white vinegar in the bottle and sprayed the wallpaper after scoring let it set for a few minutes then sprayed again and started peeling the wallpaper off, learned this trick from a professional wallpaper hanger.

When you have all the wallpaper off wash down the walls with a product called TSP can be purchased at any wallpaper store or Walmart... Good Luck
Steam cleaner or you can go to any hardware store and get a scorer (it rips the wallpaper a little bit) After your done that buy this goop stuff, it should be with all the wallpaper accessories and spray it on there. Leave set for a couple of minutes and use a putty knife to get it off.
Try wetting it in the hard to remove places..
Use a sand paper, but dont over use it, u might damage the wall!!

    cheers
They sell specific liquid solutions for this. Hot water and soap will also work but not as effectively. Apply the product with a sponge and let it set for a bit, then use a scraper. For real problem removal, use sandpaper first, then the product. Whatever you do, DO NOT use a heating/steam gun on it.

I had to do that once in a place where the very clever people put up wallpaper over wallpaper x6. It took off chunks of the sheet-rock itself. Total disaster.

If you have only one layer of paper on a steamer should work fine. Econimically, go for the liquid product. Works just as well for far less $.
There's a device with spiked wheels/rollers you roll over the wallpaper first to score the wallpaper. After you finish, putting the tiny holes in the wall paper with the device, then take a sponge and soak it warm water. Run the sponge over the wall paper to wet the wallpaper. Allow the water to break down the wallpaper glue for at least a half hour then start working on pulling the wallpaper off.
A putty knife and a steamer. Plan to be there all day and don't rush. Remember you will have to do some patching afterwords, do this with drywall mud and sand screens. Good Luck
use soap water first then use sand paper then vote for me
Engage a painter, he will do it for you.
Steam it (to loosen up the paste), you may need to go over the paper with a wall paper ';cutter'; (this will allow the steam to pass through the wall paper) this will allow you to pull the wall paper off. After the wall paper is all off, wash the wall throughly to remove all paste residue.

Good luck...it is quite a job!
Wet the Wall and use polish paper to solve u r problem simple
bfore u strip it off, splash some warm water, it helps to remove them easily, cause the glue loses the adhesive power with water.
First peal off the outter layer then Use a spray bottle with hot water and let it soak for a few seconds then use a putty knife to scrap off
just boil some water than dip your hand in it with some cloth and then rip to wallpaper and automaticlly wallpaper gets out

How do I use Wall Magic to paint my small bathroom? How do I paint above doors where the space is small?

I'm assuming ';wall magic'; is a kit you bought. Directions can be hard to follow on a lot of those kits. Try getting some cardboard, sheets of paper(even brown bags opened up will work), or paper plates and practice your technique on that first.

Small areas and corners can be tricky when using pre-made faux finish tools. Your best bet is use a small brush, the same paints and apply them very very lightly. Use little paint, almost a dry brush. I stess this because you can always add more, but it's a lot more work when you add too much.

No matter how close you get, please realize, YOU will notice the difference, but your guests and family won't. Resist the urge to point all the faults out to them, I know it's hard, you'll always see the parts you didn't do as well as others. Let it go, and just enjoy the finished product - take from a perfectionist, you'll have to let it go or it will drive you crazy.

I ran into a similar problem using venetian plaster in my kitchen. How to touch up corners, how to do the two inch wide space of 9'dry wall on a window wall (between the windows), and how to paint above 8' high cabinets in a corner? I couldn't use the plaster on a brush, I had to have a custom color paint mixed to hand apply and blend in to those impossible to reach areas.

Pain in the a**, but looks awesome and I'm glad I spent the back breaking hours to do it. Good luck! How do I use Wall Magic to paint my small bathroom? How do I paint above doors where the space is small?
THERE ARE PAINT PADS MADE THAT WILL GET INTO NARROW SPACES. THE NAP WILL HOLD PAINT WELL AND STILL SMEAR IT GOOD ON THE SURFACE YOU ARE PAINTING WITH NO OVERLAP ON SOMETHING YOU DON'T WANT TO PAINT. I HAVE USED THEM TO PAINT LARGE SURFACES ALSO. THEY ARE NEAT.

Painting the walls of a room different colours....?

I am painting a room and want to make it look larger. Ive heard that if you paint one wall a slightly darker colour it can make the room look bigger.

My question is which wall do you paint darker?Painting the walls of a room different colours....?
    What's the room used for?

The house we moved into was newly renovated and they'd painted the chimney breast in the main bedroom (a decent sized, light room of about 3.5m x 4m / 11ft x 13ft and with two large windows of about 1.5m x 1m) a kind of salmon colour, then the rest of the walls and ceiling white. This made no difference and I think made the room look worse as there was too much contrast between the colours.

In my experience, if you want to make a room look bigger use white for the ceiling - use white for any coving you have as well - and paint the walls a slightly off white, or a very light shade; something with only a hint of colour. Painting one wall a different colour from the rest may break up the shape of the room a bit and give the feeling of having ';two rooms in one'; (whatever that means) but I really don't think it will make much difference to your perception of that room's size.Painting the walls of a room different colours....?
the wall on which maximum natural light / sunlight falls - paint it dark or darker

and opposite wall - try to make it just plaint WHITE

and see the diff - you will feel the room is bigger

same way if you paint the other 2 walls white - pute white -it still looks fantastic - and bigger

but if you try to paint the cealing Darker - you will feel the height of the room is become less

    all optical illusions
You or talking of a painting method called accent, rooms 10x10 really is 10x10 no matter what color. I know what people say and its very much acceptable my us painters.

I think many years ago a painter really started this rumor

There more such as put a shot of black into a gallon of white paint and it stays white longer. Okay you wish to lighten up a room.

So to accent your colors have to look good upside the other as they meet the longest wall where the light is coming in make that your lightest wall.

In you corner just square off at both ends and let dry.

Do your lightest color first than skip a wall and paint the next one as you did that one let dry.

Come back and paint the other two walls a enjoy you accent paint job.
Larger is subjective. Different is fact.

I've done this many times. The idea being ';different'; is a distraction, not an enlargement. Two colors at most, and if a darker color is the single wall then make it the short wall, or the wall with the most openings to lessen the effect of darker.

    Rev. Steven
    whichever one you want
I would paint the smallest wall darker. It will add depth,

and make the rest of the walls look brighter.
Well, a good tip is to paint the lower half of the room the darker shade and the upper half a lighter shade. This can be done if you're using similar colours, like beige and taupe. This effect will not work if you use totally different colours (like blue and red). It works and makes your room look much bigger. Trust me!
That's what is known as an accent wall. The effect isn't to make a room seem larger, but to make it cozier. The general rule is that light colors make a room look larger, dark colors make a room cozier. If a room is too light, it can become stark, and adding an accent wall is one solution to remedy a stark room.
I have painted many, many rooms and I have used a variety of colors, and it's true that a darker color can make the room look bigger, because it adds depth. I believe it would be the the wall theists on the side of the room your trying to extend in other words if your room is rectangle as you walk in paint the wall that you see as you walk in the room. Good luck I hope it works out.

What color should I paint my wall?

Ok , so I want to paint my room wall and I don't know which color to go with , all my room furniture is a peachy/apricoty color .. So, what do u guys think? .. And what color carpet should I go with?

Thanks a bunch :DWhat color should I paint my wall?
Well it's kinda hard to give you an exact color, especially not knowing what your room looks like, because you could do 2 colors, for example, 2 sides of your room can be painted white and the other 2 sides could be a peachy color. But now that your painting your room it could be a great time to re-decorate your whole room, simply by just buying new bedsheets. I'm suggesting to get white bed sheets with patterns on it to look fancy. and you could paint your room any color u want that will flatter your furniture. and for your carpet. just got with the normal one. buy a beige-ish small carpet and put it in front your bed, it will definitely gonna make it more stylish something like this

Oooh, painting is a tough one! I suggest going to the Benjamin Moore website and using their room paint application. They have a ton of rooms models to use and their whole pallette to choose from. I used it for my house, both interior and exterior and haven't bee disappointed yet! Good luck! :)

VJ on the bottom of the wall-is this painted the darker or the lighter accent colour?

Dark colors are heavy. Always put dark on bottom and lighter on top. A lot is what you want to accent, make look larger or smaller.

Do I NEED to wash down my walls before painting if I use BERH paint?

Ok, so I have a LOT of painting to do and limited time!! BEHR has a paint+primer in one. however my walls have scuff marks and hand prints on them.. Since the paint has primer in it already, does anyone know if Id be ok if I painted without washing the walls first? I was sorta hoping the primer would do the trick.....Do I NEED to wash down my walls before painting if I use BERH paint?
You don't have to since it has the primer already in it, but if there's any kind of grease or anything like that I would suggest doing it. Behr Ultra paint is awesome. I worked at Home Depot and went to a class over the new paint. It is really good.Do I NEED to wash down my walls before painting if I use BERH paint?
Paint will cover and stick to a lot of dirt, but...if it is loose, like dust, or greasy, like cooking oil, then you need to remove it first. Also some stains bleed..ie magic marker, lip stick and these need to be sealed
no you do not have to do that. just make any repairs to holes and sand before painting
always do it no mater what paint

play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find something that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family %26amp; color name, the ';painted'; rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I think it would look stunning to a SandScapes faux finish in a rich brown like ';curly willow'; (# 7175). It would set off the light wood %26amp; the red + give it a warm feeling - kinda like a coffee shop.

You can also take a photo of your house %26amp; upload it to the makeover gallery on this website:

I think since you said the cabinets and flooring is light...maybe you should go a tad darker on the walls. Maybe a nice chocolate, which would also compliment your red applicances. If that's too drastic for you maybe a nice soft color like the inside of a malt ball candy. :-) Good luck with your kitchen redo.

How can I smooth out a wall that has been painted with textured paint?

Depending on the type of wall, you may have to do the following additional prep work:

Textured Walls: There are three methods of removing or concealing wall texture.

Floating the Walls: Use a broad knife to trowel the joint compound over the rough walls in light, even coats. After the wall is at the preferred smoothness, allow to dry. Prime the newly smooth surface with 2 coats of primer/sealer.

Sanding: If the texture is minimal and the new wallcovering is heavily-textured, this process is adequate and time-saving. After sanding, a primer/sealer is applied. This method is the least preferred, however, because of the labor and the dust that covers the entire house.

Hang lining paper: Fill all holes and cracks with joint compound, chip off any high points with a broad knife, then lightly sand the wall surface in order to help even out the wall. Prime the wall and allow to dry thoroughly. Using a heavy-duty adhesive, apply to lining paper. Sometimes it really helps to paste both the wall surface and the back of the lining paper since the lining paper is so porous and heavy. Once the lining paper has dried, apply a primer/sealer.

Wood-paneled walls: Wash thoroughly with a deglossing solution and water, then sand smooth. Fill vertical grooves of paneling with spackle and apply primer; or apply primer and hang heavy-duty lining paper. Seal with acrylic or alkyd primer, allow to cure, and hang wallcovering.

Been there, done that, I used an old fashioned carpenters hand plane to knock down the high peaks. It was a knuckle buster though and it will only smooth it out so far. The sanding idea would work after that. How can I smooth out a wall that has been painted with textured paint?
Sand it then put a thick coat of primer.
I wound up using a razor blade scraper. I first sprayed the wall with a light mist of water, and waited about 5 minutes before scraping. God what a mess, but it was better than sanding. Good luck with it. I don't think I will ever use it again. You could always prime it and paint over it or prime it and pick another colored textured paint. Holly
You'll probably have to sand it.If it's not that rough you can wallpaper over it and paint the wallpaper. If you decide to paper do a small test strip to see if you need to size the wall.I always use wall paper paste so it sticks well.
The best way is to use an electric sander with coarse sand paper to prevent clogging....Its quite messy so wear a dust mask.....If you don't like that idea you can mix artex in with your paint and roller over it to fill in some minor cracks and textures....
Score it with a knife and then get it freshly skimmed over by a plasterer, just a finishing skim.

Wow! O.K. here is how I think you can do it. Download those images you can't live without on your computer. Print them in black and white on transparency sheets. Prime the walls and paint your base color. Borrow an projector to put the transparency images on the wall. Use a soft lead pencil to trace the images on the wall. Depending on how shaky you hand is you may want to use painters tape on the edges and start painting them in. Do not go for too much detail. You can use a damp soft sea sponge on the wet paint to give it some depth. Wet the sponge, ring it out and then wring it out again in a towel. You will be blotting so keep the sponge clean. You will have to completely empty your room of furniture and it will take about a week because of drying time. Good luck.

How do you paint a lighter color paint on top a already painted(darker) wall?

Use a primer and even have the primer tinted to match your top coat. The home center or paint store can tint your primer for you. Kilz brand also is best for priming over another color. How do you paint a lighter color paint on top a already painted(darker) wall?
YOU HAVE TO USE A SEALER PRIMER THAT IS LIGHT COLOR LIKE WHITE OR GRAYHow do you paint a lighter color paint on top a already painted(darker) wall?
You need a primer first. Then you can paint the lighter color.
If the color is really dark use two coats of a good thick primer (Kilz is nice) and you should be cool
Primer and then any color that you like
Use a primer. It's a 'more watery' type of base coat that also helps the main paint settle better into the wall. Make sure it's a primer for light paints (it'll look white, anyway). You don't need to paint a perfect wall - you can leave the roller marks on them), then when it's dry, place the final coat of paint.

We're almost done painting most of our house - you don't realize how many walls you have until you set about to paint them - and priming the walls leaves a more uniform color.
Prime it first, you can use more thant 1 coat
You can prime first then paint, but I have recently discovered a better way... At Walmart they have a Kilz paint that has the primer in it already. I was skeptical until I used it. I will probably never buy another paint brand. My daughter wanted a white wall painted blood red and had done a wall like that before and used 5 coats of paint to get it looking right. We bought the Kilz paint and it completely covered in 2 coats. It amazed me, and I've painted a lot of walls. As far as one coat paints, As you were told to use, this is the only truly one coat paint that I've ever used and it took 2. If we weren't going from such extreme white to red I believe it would have actually only taken one coat. Give it a try. Good luck and God bless!!
    use primer
primer and buy the densest pigment primer they have.
You will need to prim the wall with a light primmer before you paint it a lighter color.
use a primer paint over the dark color first, it stops the dark from leaching thru and not as much paint is required
It depends on the original color of the wall and if you are going for a shade lighter. Now if the shade lighter is not the same color of the original wall, then you have to stain the wall white and use the color you want on top of that. (You should also check out paint charts where ever they sell paint.
USE PRIMER FIRST AND THEN YOU CAN USE ANY COLOR YOU WANT..
You need to by a one coat paint. In other words, you need to buy a really good paint. Try SherwinWilliams if you have one near you. It will cost about $25.00 a gallon or more. The old paint will act like a primer, be sure to sand the walls down to smooth it out. A palm sander with a 180 grit will work fine.
I think what everyone is repeating here is you need to use a light primer first; then paint over the primer with your final coat.
You need a primer like KILZ.
    djg
If it is really dark, then you would need to put a primer coat on first, then one to two coats of the paint color that you choose.
You need to put a primer over the dark color before you try painting over with a lighter color. A primer will work miracles and help your new, lighter color be 'true' (rather than changing some due to the darker color effecting it).

If you have any old stains or mildew to paint over, Killz does a good job with that. Be SURE to use it with ventilation and fans. It's wicked.

Someone at the paint store or Lowes or Home Depot or whereever you go for the primer will be able to help you select the primer that's right for the job.

Painting bedroom walls, and maybe furniture-need advice?

I am painting my bedroom walls the colour Dix Blue by Farrow and Ball. My bedroom furniture is old, scuffed, and does not match the colour of the walls at all. I was thinking of painting it, but am not sure what colour to use. Many people have suggested brown, while I wondered if a shade similar to Dix Blue, but much darker, would go well. Any suggestions or recommendations?Painting bedroom walls, and maybe furniture-need advice?
You can either do white, a color in the same category as dix blue or my personal favorite, a variation of creamy orange. Orange and blue are contrasting colors and therefore are extremely eye-catching.Painting bedroom walls, and maybe furniture-need advice?
I think that's a great idea. As for the brown with blue, some people see that color combination as beautiful and French, but it's not for everyone and sometimes fails, costing you money. I like the idea of a pastel orange for a complementary color.

What color should i paint my accent wall?

my walls are linin white, my furnitue is black, grey and tan. any ideas would be great!!!What color should i paint my accent wall?
It depends on the STATEMENT you want it to make, and how bold YOU are. I would probably go maroon, or a rich, rich red.

That would go so well with your black, gray, and tan.

Then add accents with small/medium (not huge) splashes of the maroon or rich red in vases, flowers, lamps, throws, pillows, etc. But, don't over-do with the accent color. If you find yourself wanting to go overboard with the accent color, add some items that are your original colors with trim in the accent color, or black, gray, tan, and maroon or rich red plaid, in pillows, etc. If the room is large, think in terms of several of the accessories being your wall accent color, then adding more accessories (just a few) in a third color that's complimentary to the wall color. Like: if you do wall in rich maroon, the third color could be dusty mauve, or even soft terra cotta. Or get brave and sassy with a bright goldish-orangeish YELLOW.

In my opinion though, you can hardly go wrong with a deep rich red or maroon for the wall color. Especially maroon. It is a timeless classic, and it is elegant, yet simple. It spans most all styles, from contemporary, to French country, to romantic Victorian; classic, casual, office/library, to your formal dining room, and more.

Whatever color you do your accent wall, of course you will be imagining ahead of time what it will look like. ALSO imagine that color in some of your accent/accessory pieces.

Balance the accessory pieces throughout the room - that's what will make the room really look PUT TOGETHER - WELL PUT TOGETHER.

    Have fun!

    P. S. With maroon or rich, rich red, be prepared to apply at least 2 good coats, maybe even more. What color should i paint my accent wall?
A peanut butter color would be a good choice. It would brighten the room, but it wouldn't jump out at you.A real deep burgundy would also go well with the colors that you now have.As long as it suits you and it is not gaudy, go for it.
the colors of your furniture are dark and with the white walls, your furniture stick out. So paint your accent wall red, or medium green to bring the dark furniture to gather. Also, if you have doors that can be painted then paint the doors with a Ivory white color this would make the room flow to gather.
stix to earth tones they go good with black tan and grey

I have to paint a dark burgundy wall white. What is the best way to go about doing this?

I really have limited time as I am moving out tomorrow. I have already put one coat of primer on it, but it looks VERY uneven and patchy and I didn't know if that is what it is supposed to look like. Would I be ok if I put the white paint on next? Or do you think I need another coat of primer? I really can't afford to buy much more paint as I am a very poor college student. Help!I have to paint a dark burgundy wall white. What is the best way to go about doing this?
From experience with red walls going white, double coat that primer first. It will look more even after the second coat. It will take 2-3 coats of white paint. You must let each coat of primer and paint dry completely. Generally 1 hour to dry. If you are short on time, work fast, open windows, borrow fans, etc. If you try to paint on the walls before the primer dries the burgundy will peep through. Good Luck!I have to paint a dark burgundy wall white. What is the best way to go about doing this?
Prime the walls first, then paint them white. It will take less paint overall. Good luck!
    one coat undercoat/primer..... is enough

go over it with 3 coats of paint..... more time you allow between the coats the better will cover the dark...... at least 2 hours between coats for water based paints.....(dryer the previous coat better the coverage of second coat....)

    good luck
Either a second coat of primer or a very high quality paint. I've found porter brand to have good coverage. Though I don't know about white over a dark color.
If you want to paint a red wall white just put multiple coats of white on or hire a pro
    Buy good primor!
Kilz is a primer but now comes in colors and differant finishes.

It should cover your primer in one coat.
before putting another coat of primer sand it down to smooth it out if it's patchy, then add a second coat of primer.
One coat of primer is enough. You should be able to paint with white paint now. Hopefully you have a quality paint. Cheap paint doesn't cover well.
You shouldn't need two coats of primer. Go ahead and add the coat of white paint. That should even it out. If there are still areas that look blotchy, you can touch them up, but you shouldn't have to repaint the entire wall.
I would have suggested sanding the walls first, but at this point I would try another coat of primer first
I would have washed the walls with TSP. This removes paint and dirt. Then I would have primed %26amp; painted. I guess at this pipnt another coat of primer and then paint.
if you have more primer, but more on it. If not, start paining white! You will probably have to put a couple coats of white on it though.

Painting my new house 2 tone with accent wall...advice?

I am getting ready to paint my house. I am painting the trim/doors/ceiling white, and the walls tan(ish) with an accent wall in each room. What order should I do it...trim, then walls, or walls then trim? I think the accent wall will be last? Just some good general advice from someone who's done it before would be great!

Thanks in advance!Painting my new house 2 tone with accent wall...advice?
    I love how people criticize your style instead of answering the question....that's ';passe';

Walls then trim. Personally, i take the trim off and then put it back on at the end. However, I am messy. You could also just pull it back an inch. If you're not worried about being messy though, the proper way is to do the walls, then the trim. i agree that the accent wall should be last after the ';main'; walls, but still leave the trim for very last.

By the way, I think that will look good!Painting my new house 2 tone with accent wall...advice?
I usually do the accent wall first, then other walls, then trim.
do not paint one acccent wall in every room.. out of style.. very passe'
    Use black for the trim.
One accent on each room is a little too much. An accent color goes great on a big room to create a focal point. Whole colors each room is good to create its individual identitiy.

Really depnds on what colors are already existing, or what colors you want to see. I did an olive green accent wall for my living room to have a great backdrop to my Parisian scenes oil paintings. Got slip covers for my couch set after to balance out the new colors in the room.

I also finished painting my bathroom a cooler green to promote that serene feeling. Even though my place is only an apartment, at least the paint adds a more personal feel. Curtains close the deal after.

My bedroom will have that boudoir sense cause I will paint it a merlot red.

Each room should have its own personality. So you can paint a color to each room. Paint first. Trim after. So you have less tape time to worry about.

Get accessories last. They should compliment your colors and thus creating a harmonious place. This is so much fun.

Trims and moldings go great to create the illusion of higher ceilings or if you have high ceilings to accnetuate the actual asset.

    Good luck.

i want to paint stripes in the bottom half of my room, the problem is i have two windows on different walls but they are not at the same height. How can i do this and make it work?I have two windows in my room not in the same height of the wall how can i paint stripes in the bottom half?
I would find a spot high enough to include both windows( but equal level from the floor all around) and put a chair rail or border around the room at that level. Then paint the stripes below the chair rail/border.I have two windows in my room not in the same height of the wall how can i paint stripes in the bottom half?
Just paint around your room like you would if your windows were the same
Perhaps this may work.Hang curtains over both windows, making sure they both hang exactly the same length.this should give the allusion of being of the same height.Your stripes then can be started at the lower edge of the lowest window.Depending on your privacy issues,I would hang sheers with darker panels over them that can be tied back or closed for privacy.
Paint the strips and if they go through the window just continue at the same measurement on the other side. It will just look continuous.

  • When I removed the tape after painting a wall, it pulled the new paint up also.?

I have spent days painting a wall red, many coats. I finally finished. When I removed the painters tape, it pulled the paint up in sheets. How do I fix this? Sand it down at the edges %26amp; repaint? Why did this happen? Should I have pulled the tape up %26amp; retaped between each coat? When I removed the tape after painting a wall, it pulled the new paint up also.?
You will have to re- tape the walls and re-paint the areas where the paint came off. Be sure to remove the tape just as soon as your done painting...while the paint is still wet.

The paint dried on the wall AND the tape, hence, becoming a continual sheet of paint. When you pulled the tape you tore the sheet of paint. You just didn't know. When I removed the tape after painting a wall, it pulled the new paint up also.?
no! pull it off when you get done painting it, that way while it's wet, don't wait until it dryes
just from watching my fiance with painters tape, i know that after a few days, the blue tape adheres very strongly to the wall. we have had pieces of the wall come off when ripping the tape off. I would change the tape daily so it doesn't get overly adhesive.
I wonder this as well, This has also happened to me.
I usually use a razor knife and lightly cut the edge of the tape before I remove it to avoid this problem. You should be able to sand and paint without too much notice. Just fade into old paint a little to hide joints.

I've had this happen, too. Fortunately, mine was just at the edges where the wall and trim meet. So it was a touch-up job. I would sand the edge where the paint came up and re-paint.
If I use tape (which I don't anymore, you get a steady hand after a few jobs, not bragging, it's just human learning, anyone will pick it up.) I pull the tape off as soon as Im done while the paint is still wet,

it's just common sense really, if the paint dries it makes a contigious bond, it will chip and flake when you pull the tape off if it dries,

pull it off wet and re tape for multiple coats and this will never happen,

to fix your mistakes, sand, re tape, throw a quick margin and yank tape.

If the paint is High gloss, your kinda screwed, you can't blend or repair glossy paint, you have to re-do the whole section, well that is if your particular...
DON'T USE TAPE. Just use a small brush and a steady hand to paint along edges. You will find it is easy really. You start slow and soon become good at it and go fast.
no, what your supposed to do is take a razor knife and ';score'; the edge of the tape
Stick the tape to your pants a few times before you stick it on a surface.

Make it as low tack as possible.
Did you use the blue tape? The blue tape is painter's tape. It is made to come off easy. However, if you painted over it and the paint dried on it and the wall, that is your problem. Next time, use blue tape and don't paint so thick on the tape itself. That should solve your problem.

Blue painter's tape will come off easy for a few days. The longer it is on the more difficult it is to remove.
Yes I would sand and repaint.. I have experienced this more with latex paint than oil based, the best way to ensure this wont reoccur is to let is sit and dry for a full couple weeks to really dry before pullin up the tape... and be slow and methodical when pulling up on the tape.
It sounds like the surface you were painting on was not properly prepared. It should have been clean of dirt and especially grease and given a slightly roughed up texture. Also, some paints do not stick to certain surfaces without special preps.

A prime example of this is using acrylic/latex or water-based paint on top of a surface painted with enamel. In essence, you are mixing oil and water, which, as you know, do not mix. If your surface were painted or primed with enamel, you would have to use a special preparation on it before painting with a water-based paint.

You can try sanding down the edges and repainting, but do rough up the whole surface a bit with sandpaper first.

However, if you have painted over a surface that wasn't properly prepared and doesn't normally 'take' with the paint you've been using, expect it to peel off in layers over time.
u should use tehe blue tape
