Is there any laws that I can use?The City Council have told me that I have to have a street sign on my newly painted front wall. Can I object?
Street naming and numbering is a statutory function. The relevant powers for local authorities are contained in Sections 64 and 65 of the Towns Improvement Clauses Act 1847, and Sections 17, 18 and 19 of the Public Health Act of 1925. The Public Health Act 1925, S 19 gives authorities the power to insist that the name of every street shall be shown in a conspicuous position and also alter or renew it if it becomes illegible. This section makes it illegal to pull down a street name, which has been lawfully set up, or fixes a notice or advertisement within close proximity to the sign.
Reasonable compensation must be paid if the street name is painted on your wall, but other than that, there is little you can do, unless you can identify a viable alternative. The City Council have told me that I have to have a street sign on my newly painted front wall. Can I object?
Yes you can Object........not that it will do you any good
You can object indeed. How good it'll do you, that's another question.
if you can object to a neighbours gutter hanging over your boundary i sure you can object to it being ON your property. my neighbour painted over the street sign on his house and the council put one on post in the ground instead because you couldn't read it anymore. so if they do put one up, paint over it.
cause you can object but wouldn't it be better for you if you rented the bit of wall to them council tax says it all
I don't know about any laws (although if its your wall you should be able to object).... but we were told that we had to have a bus stop outside our house which we weren't happy about at all but there was nothing we could do. The day they came to paint the bus stop there were cars parked in the road so they had to paint them in a different part of the road.
Maybe you could do something like that? cover your wall in some kind of plastic or something so they can't actually put the street sign there.
Probably not very helpful but thought I'd share anyway.
You in the UK? You most certainly can object, they have no right to attach anything to your property. The usual practice is to put the street sign on posts in front of your wall.
Do you own the wall? Is it on your property? Why would they put a street sign on a wall? While Govt may take our land for ';public use'; I've never heard of them taking property before unless seized because of tax lien or criminal activity. Good luck.
yes, they have no right to put it on your property.
they can put the sign on a pole if they like.
Totally depends on where you live as it will most probably come under your local council's laws - where do you live?
Was there originally one there or are you the 1st or last housein street. If not you can object but my experience of councils is they dont listen. Do you own or rent the property if its council owned then you have no choice
If its a council house no ,if you own the property send them a notification of your intent to charge them rent for the space that the sign occupies say 1000 pounds a year that will see them off.
Is the wall part of your house? If so, charge advertising space.
If part of boundary wall, what is the problem?
